"Thank you Los Angeles" tweeted Garcetti to his followers, "the hard work begins but I am honored to lead this city for the next four years. Let's make this a great city again."

Garcetti's last name is not a Jewish one, since he is the son of a Jewish mother and a Mexican-Italian father, but Jewish news agency JTA reports he was raised Jewish. Garcetti has served as a city council member since 2001.

Following the victory, The LA Times has reported that  a Jewish man named Bernard Cohen has served as mayor of the city in 1878 - but it was a temporary appointment, and Cohen was never elected for the position.

Garcetti beat Wendy Greuel, a fellow Democrat, for the position. Greuel herself is married to a Jewish lawyer, and her 9-year-old son goes to a Jewish day school in the city.

over 600,000 Jews live in the LA area, making it the second-largest Jewish area in the USA, after New-York
