| Dear Mr. Asis,
You really don’t know what you are talking about! The facts you state are completely wrong and your interpretation of GM’s position is twisted.
GM’s problems have nothing to do with India, China or Korea. GM is being beaten in the US by Toyota who manufactures its cars in the US!!! Toyota gains market share on GM’s expense because of its superior manufacturing process, which enables it to deliver high value cars for low prices.
GM on the other hand has several overlapping brands like the ones you mentioned with lots of redundancy and waste - something Toyota eliminated long time ago.
The irony is that it was GM who recognized the advantages in moving manufacturing to China and India and quickly partnered with firms from these countries to build local manufacturing facilities. They plan to double their production in China in the next 3 years. Just go to www.gmchina.com.
As to the financial position of GM, it’s very far from the picture you portray in the article. GM generated more than $1 billion in free cash flows (after paying the interest on its debt) in 2004 and it had a cash position of almost $25 billion. Obviously not exactly a company that is going under…
The fabric of the American economy is definitely changing as it is in Israel and many other countries in the world but it doesn’t mean that there is no future for the US manufacturing sector or that thousands of people will be out of jobs. The lesson you are trying to learn from GM’s problems is just not there.
So dear Mr. Asis, next time before offering your opinion to the readers, do some basic research! You may learn something on the way…
