The potential for escalation is driven by Russia's frustration with its percieved lack of power in its own back yard and around the globe. The U.S., NATO and Russia should work out a new set of agreements that will hopefully strengthen the moderate elements in Russia while answering the concerns of both Russia and the breakaway states. If such a step is not initiated soon, the radicals will prevail and escalation will be inevitable
